51 BNP, 44 AL candidates win

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-backed candidates won in fifty-one upazilas while ruling Awami League-backed aspirants won forty-four in the second phase of the 4th upazila polls.

BNP
The BNP-backed aspirants won in Tetulia of Panchagar district, Ranishoingkal of Thakurgaon district, Ghoraghat of Dinajpur district, Lalmanithat Sadar of Lalmanirhat district, Nageshwari and Rajarhat of Kurigram, Jaypurhat Sadar and Khetlal of Jaypurhat district, Alamdighi and Shahjahanpur of Bogra district, Gomastapur of Chapainawabganj district, Naogaon Sadar, Padmatala and Badalgachhi of Naogaon district, Baghatipara, Gurudaspur and Lalpur of Natore district, Chatmahar and Bhangura of Pabna district, Gangni and Mujibnagar of Meherpur district, Jhikargachha and Bagharpara of Jessore district, Mohammadpur and Shalikha of Magura district, Dumuria of Khulna district, Kaokhali and Najirpur of Pirojpur district, Islampur and Baksiganj of Jamalpur district, Jhinaigati of Sherpur, Mymensingh Sadar of Mymensingh district, Barhatta of Netrokona district, Manikganj Sadar and Harirampur of Manikganj district, Shrinagar of Munsiganj, Savar of Dhaka district, Nagarkanda and Saltha of Faridpur district, Sunamganj Sadar and Dirai of Sunamganj district, Balaganj of Sylhet district, Sarail of Bahmanbaria, Debidwar and Manaharganj of Comilla, Chandpur Sadar of Chandpur district, Sonaimuri of Feni district, Patia of Chittagong district, Pekua of Cox’s Bazar, Kaptai of Rangamati district and Lama of Bandarban district.

Awami League
The ruling Awami League-backed candidates won in Baliadangi of Thakurgaon district, Birampur and Birganj of Dinajpur district, Hatibandha and Patgram of Lalmanirhat district, Badarganj of Rangpur district, Rajibpur of Kurigram district, Kalai of Jaypur district, Atrai, Niyamatpur and Sapahar of Naogaon district, Natore Sadar of Natore district, Kumarkhali, Khoksha and Mirpur of Kushtia, Sharsha and Chougachha of Jessore, Kachua of Bagerhat district, Charfashion and Borhanuddin of Bhola district, Safipur of Tangail district, Melanda of Jamalpur district, Ishwarganj and Bhaluka of Mymensingh district, Kalmakanda, Khaliajuri and Purbadhala of Netrokona district, Munsiganj sadar of Munsiganj district, Keraniganj of Dhaka district, Boalmari of Faridpur district, Gopalganj Sadar and Kotalipara of Gopalganj district, Shibchar and Rajoir of Madaripur district, Chunarughat of Habiganj district, Faridganj and Matlab Uttar and Matlab Dakkhin of Chandpur district, Feni Sadar, Parshuram and Chatkhil of Feni district and Chokoria of Cox’s Bazaar district.

Jamaat
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-backed candidates won eight in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenidha district, Palashbari of Gaibandha and Bagha of Rajshahi district, Lohagara of Chittagong, Kahalu and Shibganj of Bogra district, Chirirbandar of Dinajpur district and Shyamnagar of Satkhira district.

Others
United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF)-backed candidates won in Laxmichhari upazila of Khagrachhari district and Thanchi of Bandarban district. Jana Sanghati Samiti (JSS)-backed candidates won three in Ruma and Roangchhari of Bandarban district and Naniachar of Rangamati district, Jatiya Party-backed candidate won in Kishoreganj of Nilphamari and an independent candidate won in Shibpur of Narsingdi district.

Earlier, the election took place in 114 upazilas of 52 districts across the country from 8:00am to 4:00pm Thursday without any break amid violence in different places.
