NOAKHALI: Six candidates of municipal election called daylong hartal at Begumganj upazila of the district for Sunday demanding re-election to Chaumuhani Municipality.

The candidates are BNP-backed candidate Jahir Uddin Harun, Awami rebel candidate Mahfuzul Haque, Principal Abul Kalam Azad, Engineer Sheikh Shaheed, BNP rebel candidate GS Sumon and Abul Kalam Azad Ratan.

In a press conference at Chaumuhani Public Hall, the mayoral aspirants called the hartal on Saturday noon.

Meanwhile, they alleged that the voting was going normally from the morning but at 10:30am the supporters of Awami League backed candidate Aktar Hossain Faisal blasted cocktails and cast fake votes in some voting centers.

On February 13, LGRD ministry declared the mayor post vacant as Mayor Mamunur Rashid was elected Member of Parliament of the tenth national election on January 5.
