DHAKA: Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) and Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) announced a three-day long march to the Teesta River demanding fair sharing of its water between Bangladesh and India.

The announcement came from a joint press conference of BSD and CPB at Mukti Bhaban in the capital on Saturday morning.

The march will start on April 17 and will end on April 19.

Speakers at the pressing briefing said Teesta is the fourth largest trans-boundary river, flowing over Bangladesh.

Some 115 kilometers (km) of 315 km-long Teesta River and 17 percent of its catchments are in the arena of Bangladesh, they added.

Speakers made announcement of the long-march revealing data on India’s non-cooperation and government’s inactivity on the Teesta water sharing in a bid to realize the demand for fair water sharing.

The programme’s agenda included observing a nationwide ‘Dabi Dibos’ (Demand Day) for April 7. A rally will be held in front of the National Press Club at 3:00am on April 17 followed by the beginning of the march toward Teesta. It will reach Rangpur on Apr 18 and arrive at Dalia point of the Teesta Barrage on Apr 19.

BSD general secretary Comrade Khalequzzaman, CPB Comrades Sayed Abu Zafar Ahmed and Zahir Hossain Prince were among others present.
