‘Democratic govt needed for due share of Teesta’

DOANI, TEESTA BARRAGE: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Almagir on Wednesday said not only a long march but also a democratic government has to be formed to realize the fair share of Teesta River water.

“Not only the long march but also a democratic government will have to be formed to realize the due shares of the Teesta River water and the government will fearlessly work for the rights of its own country,” he said.

The BNP spokesperson was addressing the concluding rally of BNP’s long march in front of the Teesta Barrage Irrigation Project at Doani under Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonithat in the noon.

He urged all to be untied for holding national election under a non-partisan and neutral caretaker government.

BNP’s long march reached her around 12:00pm followed by beginning of the rally through reciting from the Holy Quran few minutes after 12:00 noon.

Rangpur division organizing secretary of the party, and also Lamonirhat district BNP president, Asadul Habib Dulu presided over the rally.

Earlier in the morning, the long march caravan left Rangpur after a short rally at Central Shaheed Minar premises, adjoining to the district Public Library, of the city at 10:00am after a day stay here.

He also said, “The long march towards Teesta Barrage is our journey to gain rights, a quest for due share of water.”

“This is the march for realizing our fair share of Teesta Water. We are not getting the fair shares of the water, it has been saying that the Teesta treaty will be signed soon, that isn’t being done,” he added.

BNP central leaders, including  Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, International Affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon, Education Affairs secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Selima Rahman and central and leaders and activist of its associate bodies were present at the rally ground.

Meanwhile, security measures were heightened in the Teesta Barrage area. Members of Police, Ansar, intelligence and mobile courts were deployed in the area to keep situation normal.

At the rally ground, 200 police forces and more than 50 intelligence members were deployed.

About 1000 party volunteers, wearing white T-shirt, are working for the rally.

District Superintendent of Police TM Mozahedul Islam told banglanews, adequate security measures have been taken to maintain the law-and-order situation in the whole area.
