DHAKA: Dhaka City Awami League Saturday started fundraising in aid to the people affected by Thursday night’s blaze at Nimtola in the old part of the capital city that put at least 120 people to a terrible death.
The fund was formed at an extended meeting of the city unit of the ruling party Saturday with its President MA Aziz in the chair.
At the outset of the meeting, party leaders observed one-minute silence in memory of the deceased.
After the meeting, city AL General Secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said “Awami families” have been affected mostly in the blaze.
He urged party people to extend their support in helping the survivors of the never-seen-before fire havoc.
General Secretary of the local ward Awami League Karim lost his 10 family members while Organizing Secretary Liton lost seven of his family in this pathetic incident, Maya informed.
Well-off and benevolent people have been requested to deposit money with city AL treasurer Ismat Jamil Jewel.
State Minister for Law Advocate Qamrul Islam and other senior leaders also addressed the meeting.
