DHAKA: Buoyed by a stunning outcome of the opposition stake on the Chittagong City Corporation election, BNP chairperson and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Khaleda Zia Friday congratulated Mayor-elect Manzur Alam and the councilors.
In a congratulatory message Begum Zia also thanked the residents of the port city as they elected the BNP-backed mayoral candidate, Manzur, resisting what she called conspiracies of the government. She noted that the people of Chittagong voted for him with the hope for building a modern and peaceful city.
“I congratulate the Chittagong city residents as they elected Manzur Alam by foiling all conspiracies of the government with the expectation of building Chittagong as a peaceful modern city,” Zia said in the note of felicitation.
The former prime minister also extended sympathies to those who discharged election responsibilities for the BNP-backed man--agents, leaders, workers and voters—and “fell victim of harassment, attacks and oppression”.
Begum Zia also extended sincere thanks to the officials and employees involved with the election, media workers and members of the law-enforcing agencies, who discharged their duties properly, says the message signed by BNP office secretary Ruhul Kabir.
