RANGPUR: A BNP activist injured in a clash with a rival group in the party Tuesday centering council of Peerganj upazila unit succumbed to his injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning, hospital sources said.
Mintu, 33, was injured Tuesday and he was undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died.
A case was filed against 25 leaders and activists, including former BNP lawmaker Nur Mohammad Mondol, with Peerganj police in this connection.
Police said the upazila council of the unit was called by district Joint Convener Saiful Islam and being held at Shah Abdur Rab College ground at Peerganj Tuesday.
The rival group led by Nur Mohammad called a rally at the same venue the same day. To avert possible clash, the Upazila administration imposed section-144 restrictions on assembly to maintain law and order.
Saiful group then shifted the council to Baluahat, two kilometers away from upazila headquarters.
Over 100 activists of Nur Mohammad Mondol attacked the council, leaving around 39 leaders and activists of Saiful Group wounded.
Peerganj upazila officer-in-charge Rawshan Mostafa told BanglaNews24.com.bd that a case was filed against 25 leaders and activists, including Nur Mondol.
Tensions went high in the upazila. Additional police force was posted to defuse the tensions.
Saiful Islam demanded immediate arrest of the culprits while Nur Muhammad Mondol rejected the allegation he had hands behind trouble.
