DHAKA: The opposition BNP forewarned the government Tuesday against any bid to hinder the holding of their grand rally in the capital Wednesday, saying that any such bad attempt would only boomerang.
“Any bid by the government to foil the grand rally would yield a boomerang effect,” cautioned BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan.
Addressing a press conference in the run-up to the rally Wednesday, he said a ‘mass surge’ has been created ahead of the agitation that will overturn any bid to foil the democratic political programme.
Khan, also the chief coordinator for the rally, alleged that ruling-party “cadres” launched attacks on BNP leaders and activists while the administration was out to harass the workers.
“They are also impeding our campaign for the grand rally.”
Khan visited Paltan Maidan where the grand rally would take place with party Chairperson and ex-PM Begum Khakeda Zia in the chair.
Zia is to announce steps of anti-government movement from the grand rally, coming at the culmination of their countrywide divisional campaigns targeted at regrouping the party after the recent hiccups and whipping up public opinion against government’s wrongdoings.
Referring to power, gas and water crises, toll collection and tender manipulation reportedly by Juba League and Chhatra League leaders and activists, Khan said that the ruling Awami League has created issues of public sufferings and the opposition BNP does not need to create new issues.
BNP joint Secretary-General Amanullah Aman, Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal and DAB leader Dr ZM Zahid Hossain were among others present.
