DHAKA: Bangladesh beat South Africa by 43-run in the first match of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Wednesday (January 27).
Bangladesh U-19 captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz won the toss and decided to bat first in the Group A match that started at 9:00am here.
Young tigers scored a fighting 240-run. Nazmul Hossain Shanto scored 73 runs off 82 balls. Besides, Pinak Ghosh and Joyraz Sheik took 43 and 46 runs to help Bangladesh set the target for the junior Proteans.
Of the South Africa bowlers, WA Mulder bagged three wickets while L Sipamla, SA Whitehead and T de Zorzi took one wicket each.
While chasing the target defending champion South Africa U-19 batsmen managed to score only 197-run losing all wickets with 8 balls remaining. L Smith hit 100-run while AD Galiem, F Sayanvala and SA Whitehead took 22, 17 and 13 runs.
Captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Saifuddin picked up three wickets each. Besides, Saeed Sarkar and Saleh Ahmed Shawon took two wickets each. Nazmul Hossain Shanto was adjudged player of the match.
Junior tigers are set to play their second match against Scotland Under-19s on January 31 (Sunday). The match will start at 9:00 (local time) at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar.
