DHAKA: As part of the government initiative to make a ‘Digital Bangladesh’, the country’s secretariat has now been brought under WiFi coverage.
State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak inaugurated the service at conference hall of Public Administration Ministry on Sunday.
The government official will be able to access internet simply using a PIN. Guests and journalists who visit the secretariat will also able to enjoy the WiFi service.
Project director (PD) Saiful Islam said the secretariat has been brought under WiFi coverage with the support of National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government (Phase-II).
The WiFi zone is covering the entire area of the secretariat, he added.
Zunaid Ahmed Palak said a total of 487 upazilas will be covered under fiber optic network by June 30 in 2015. Some 18,130 government offices will be brought under internet connectivity in June next year.
A total of 800 offices are being brought under Video conferencing systems, he added.
The state minister also said that government officials will be given 25,807 tablet computers aimed at bringing them under internet network. Duties of the officials will be increased. They, however, will be available for 24 hours.
Secretariat has been brought under free Wi-Fi connection aimed at modernizing the administrative activities. Through this, the administrative work will be speeded up, the minister said.
Zunaid Ahmed Palak said, “Under the National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government (Phase-II) project, we will bring all the government offices at the upazila-level under internet connectivity in June this year. The digital window project will cover all the unions across the country. It will help reduce the existing digital gap among people at all levels, increase the impact of the digital economy. Thus the country will become a ‘Digital Bangladesh’ before 2021.”
Apart from Zunaid Ahmed Palak, acting cabinet secretary Nazrul Islam and acting ICT Division secretary Shyam Sunder Shikder were also present at the ceremony, Secretary to Post and Tele Communication Ministry Foyjur Rahman Chowdhury, project director joint secretary Saiful Islam and deputy director Ashraf Hossain.
