Top Gadgets of 2014

DHAKA: Before welcoming 2015, let’s take a few moments to look back at 2014’s top gadgets.

According to a review by ‘iDigitalTimes’ Google Cardboard  is the top gadget of 2014 followed by Moto 360, iPhone 6, Nest Learning Thermostat, Project Ara, Selfie Stick, 3D Printers, New Nintendo 3DS, Pebble Steel, Logitech UE Boom.

1. Google Cardboard

Google Cardboard is VR for the masses, affordable cardboard pieces that you can put together yourself and turn into budget VR goggles for a fairly wide range of devices.

Google Cardboard  is the other end of the VR spectrum compared to the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, with the Gear VR falling somewhere in between. The potential of VR technology for phones has scarcely been tapped yet and Cardboard has the potential to bring it to everyone.

2. Moto 360
The Moto 360 was the first smartwatch we really fell in love with. In a world of square devices the Moto 360 was a beautiful circle (mostly), with a thin bezel, attractive leather and metal straps and a distinctive look.

There are other good looking smartwatches on the market now like the LG G Watch R and Asus ZenWatch, but the Moto 360 is the device that started it all and continues to be the smartwatch that all rivals are compared to.

3. iPhone 6
The phone that finally brought multiple sizes to iOS world. Apple's 6th (but actually 9th) iPhone brought the company's iconic smartphone to the 4.7 and 5.5 inch realm of screen real estate.

Meaning Apple users with larger hands no longer need feel like Paul Bunyan.

4. Nest Learning Thermostat
The Nest Learning Thermostat is the start of smart home, creating an interconnected home that interacts with your devices and makes your life easier.

A thermostat adjusts itself according to your needs which you can control through phone. Google’s purchase of Nest takes this ideal of smart home even closer to fruition. If 2014 was the year of wearables, 2015 will be the year of smart home.

5. Project Ara
Google's modular phone project Ara could change phones as we know them forever.

Seeing it power on for the first time this year brought it that much closer to reality.

6. Selfie Stick
First invented in 2006, by Toronto-based entrepreneur Wayne Fromm, the selfie stick didn’t really take off until this year when the tool suddenly gained a ton of attention from smartphone photographers around the world.

The Selfie stick is sure to be one of the hottest stocking stuffers of 2014 and so we’ve added it to our list of best gadgets this year.

7. 3D Printers
In January, CES debuted a number of 3D Printer models that set them up to be some of the hottest tech gadgets of 2014.

With several successful Kickstarter projects featuring affordable 3D printer models, people could start creating everything from home décor, to figurines, jewelry, or even candy.

8. New Nintendo 3DS
While technically only out in Japan and Australia, the New Nintendo 3DS  a worthy upgrade to the best handheld gaming machine on the market with faster performance and more buttons.

Anyone confused as to which 3DS to buy should look to see which has "New" in the title. Need Nintendo say more?

9. Pebble Steel
Pebble Steel continues to hold its ground even with Android Wear and the iWatch all that anyone is talking about. While it lacks a full color LCD display like most current and future smartwatches, the Pebble Steel has many times more apps than Android Wear, an attractive look, lengthy battery life and great functionality.

In many ways Pebble was the trendsetter for what a smartwatch should be able to do. It remains to be seen if they can hold their ground as the second generation of Android Wear smartwatches start to hit the market.

10. Logitech UE Boom
Logitech's UE Boom portable bluetooth speaker exudes quality.

Between the slick designs on the body to the ability to partner other UE Boom's with each other for multiple speakers playing the same tune, Logitech has a hit on their hands.
