‘Govt monitoring Facebook, Twitter to curb militancy’

DHAKA: State minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan said that the government is monitoring popular social media websites Facebook and Twitter to find out militant activities and their financial sources.

“We are checking all activities of civil society organizations (CSO) on social media,” he told journalists after attending a meeting of the special committee on encountering militancy at secretariat in city on Sunday.

While answering the reporters on militant activities in Bangladesh, he said that the government is working to curb the militancy step by step.

“Militants have been carrying their activities through Facebook and Twitter for long time,” he added. “We are trying to find out their roots.”

According to the minister, the government has also taken several initiatives to motivate the militants. “In this regard, we will update the curriculum of madrasa education.”

However, members of the detective branch (DB) are trying to find out whether any militant activities are going on in the country, said Asaduzzaman.

“Detectives are also working with the World Bank report, and they are doing well,” he commented.
