National Phone Chairman, 20 others get bail

DHAKA: A Dhaka court Sunday granted bail to 21 accused, including chairman of National Phone Amisur Rahman Sinha and its Managing Director Mohammod Jahangir, in a case of illegal international call termination surreptitiously using VoIP (voice over internet protocol) technology.

The Metropolitan Session Judge’s Court bailed them out upon a bond of Tk 10,000 each.

Earlier in the day, they surrendered before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court and filed their bail petition.

The other accused are General Manager Nurul Afsar, Deputy General Managers Dulal Chandra Das, Subrata Kumar Pal and Mesbah Uddin Mallik, Assistant General Managers Ahedur Rahman, Tarit Kumar Saha, Saem Alam Saif and Nazmul Islam, Senior Manager Rouranak Chakma, Managers Shafiqur Rahman, Mohammad Ullah, Jasim Uddin, Zulhas Uddin, Saber Hossain, Arman khan, Syed Muhammad Mustakim, Noor Mohammad Patwari, Nazmul Ahmed and Zubyer Bin Hasan.

Meanwhile, National Phone’s Director Rebeka Jahangir and Telephone Engineer Rabeya Zaman are on bail.

Telecom watchdog Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on March 23 sealed off the National Phone Ltd for its suspected involvement in the high-tech underworld.

Assistant Director of BTRC Maidul Islam filed the case with Gulshan police station on 25 March in this connection, amid a fracas over VoIP heist.
