HC summons cyber tribunal judge

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) on Wednesday summoned Dhaka Cyber Tribunal judge KM Shamsul Alam and UK-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce president Mokhlesur Rahman Chowdhury (Mahtab) on July 27 over a writ petition filed for public interest.

The HC bench comprising Justice Qazi Rezaul Haque and Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman passed the order after a hearing.

The court asked them to appear before it on July 27 in person and explain why it would not bring contempt of court accusation against them.

Advocate Subir Nandi Das moved for the writ in the court while deputy attorney general Tapas Kumar Biswas stood for the state.

Subir Nandi Das told banglanews that UK-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce president Mokhlesur Rahman Chowdhury (Mahtab) passed comments in a Talk Show that were contempt to the court.

Judge Court lawyer Golam Rabbani collected the video of the comments and filed a lawsuit against Mokhlesur Rahman Chowdhury (Mahtab) with Kotowali Thana under Information Technology Act on May 9, he added.

Subir further said, Mokhlesur Rahman Chowdhury plead with the Cyber Tribunal on May 24 for bail. But, Mokhlesur Rahman and his lawyer, no one was present at the court during the hearing.

This is why the court passed the order terming all his appeals as ineffective.

This is why Mokhlesur Rahman filed the writ petition with the court challenging the order.
