DHAKA: The information and communication technology (ICT) division is set to organize an ‘Internet Week’ in 487 upazilas the country from September 5 with the view to increase efficiency of people and growth of earning from the sector.
Three expositions also will be arranged in three divisional headquarters -- Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet.
The ICT division also wants to connect 16-crore people of the country with Bangalis around the globe through this initiative.
State minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak made the assertion while addressing a press conference at a city hotel on Monday.
He said the right to internet use would be sixth fundamental right in the future.
He further said, “Internet connectivity is a necessity to build ‘Digital Bangladesh’ that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced”.
“The government wants to bring the whole country under internet network. We want to reach all people through internet service and 50 percent of them through broadband connectivity.”
The state minister also said they wanted to connect 16-crore people of the country through direct and indirect internet service and to reach 40-crore Bangalis this week with the help of media and others.
He also said there was no example of organizing such a program at 487 places simultaneously. The program that will jointly be organized by the government and public sectors will help develop ICT.
Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), Grameenphone (GP) and the ICT Division will jointly organize the week, to continue till September 11, with the view to create one crore internet users every year.
Claiming the program as the biggest event of its kind in the world, BASIS president Shamim Ahsan said the event would enhance digitization in the country.
Grameenphone chief marketing officer (CMO) Yasir Azman said nowadays internet has been an essential commodity for the people of Bangladesh and GP is committed to provide internet to all.
The expositions of ‘Internet Week’ will be held at Banani Playground in city on September 5-9, at Nanking Bazar in Rajshahi town on September 9 and at the Indoor Stadium in Sylhet on September 11.
Besides, the week will be organized at digital centers of one union each from 487 upazilas of the country on September 11 with the view to highlight the utilities of internet connection to five crore countrymen.
BASIS senior vice-president Russel T Ahmed, also convener of ‘Internet Week’, said internet-based products and service oriented organizations including e-commerce, web portal and mobile application device companies will participate at the extravaganza to display their latest achievements.
As part of the program, workshops and seminars will be held around 50 universities and seven policy meetings will be organized at the media houses.
