DHAKA: Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Commission (BTRC) chairman Sunil Kanti Bose on Wednesday said they have completed composing the guidelines for fourth generation (4G) mobile telecommunications technology.
“The announcement for spectrum allocation will come in 2016,” he added.
The BTRC boss came up with disclosure in a view exchange meeting with journalists at BTRC Bhaban in city.
He further said Long-Term Evolution (LTE) will be initiated within a short time.
LTE, or more commonly marketed as 4G LTE, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones.
He said they were working on composing a guideline for the usage of 700MZ and 1,800MZ spectrum, irrespective of technology.
“This would help run 3G and 4G technologies with one spectrum, which will be cost-effective,” he added.
Evaluating the future role of BTRC, Bose said there was a time when BTRC used to expurgate information while divulging it to government. “Now the situation is not like that,” he added.
Besides, mentioning about the department of telecommunication (DoT), which is set to be formed, Bose said government also has to be understood that regulation should be done by BTRC.
He also said there should not six operators in a country like Bangladesh.
“Only one of those is performing better. One or two are making some profits but rest is not in a good condition. They have to die or join other.”
He also put emphasis on producing skilled manpower to face challenges that are looming.
BTRC chief also opined about forming cyber security organization and decreasing the bandwidth price.
BTRC vice-chairman Ahsan Habib Khan, secretary Sarwar Alam and commissioners, among others, were also present at the meeting.
