DHAKA: Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Commission (BTRC) terminated the transmission of private telecom operator Citycell on Thursday (October 20).
The commission chairman Shahjahan Mahmud confirmed the matter to media.
Citycell transmission has been shut down as the mobile phone operator could not pay its financial debts, he added.
Earlier, BTRC conducted a drive at Citycell office in city’s Mohakhali area in the afternoon.
A joint force of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police was participating in the drive.
Banani Thana officer-in-charge (OC) BM Farman Ali confirmed the matter told Banglanews.
He said the BRTC officials are conducting the drive as per court’s direction. They entered Citycell office around 5:00pm, he added.
Citycell owes the government revenues of Tk. 4.95-crore. As the government did not get the debts paid, BTRC on July had announced shutdown of the telecom’s operations. The following month, the commission issued a notice to Citycell authorities.
Later, Citycell went to Appellate Division, which ordered a two-month extension for their services.
