DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the ground stations for ‘Bangabandhu-1’ satellite named after her son also ICT Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy, installed in Gazipur and Rangamati.
The premier opened the stations through videoconferencing at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in Dhaka Tuesday (July 31).
The station in Gazipur’s Telipara has been set up as the Primary Ground Station and the station in Rangamati’s Betbunia as the Backup Ground Station, for the Bangabandhu-1 satellite.
“Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman installed the country’s first ground station in Betbunia. And we threw satellite into the space upon consultation from Sajeeb Wazed Joy,” said Sheikh Hasina.
“Beginning the journey from Mujib, now we have reached Sajeeb Wazed Joy,” she added.
Experts think that the Bangabandhu-1 satellite will kick-off commercial functioning from August or September next, if conditions favor.
However, Bangladesh threw its first ever commercial satellite ‘Bangabandhu-1’ into the orbit from Florida of United States on May 12 and secure membership in the elite club of countries having satellites.
