DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) has planned to use Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in as many as 150 constituencies in the 12th parliamentary elections to be held in 2024.
Decision has been taken to use EMVs in all local government elections too.
EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed made the disclosure at a media brief after holding a meeting at Nirbachan Bhaban’s media center Wednesday (April 10).
“We are working on a plan to use EVMs in at least fifty percent seats in the next parliamentary polls,” he said.
Besides, the upazilas and union parishads having better communication system and power connectivity will get EVMs in the local polls, he added.
From now on, all elections to the city corporations and municipalities will take place using EVMs, added Helaluddin.
The EC secretary told media that as many as 1.5 lakh EMVs were collected under a Tk 3,825 crore project initiated before the 2018 national polls.
However, EC feels need of discussion with the political parties, to execute the plan of EVM use in 2024 parliamentary elections, Helaluddin said further.
