DHAKA: Search engine giant Google is celebrating the 103rd birthday of poet Sufia Kamal Thursday (June 20) with a special Doodle.

An illustration of the poet has been featured in the Doodle, in Google's Bangladesh homepage.

Sufia Kamal was born in Shayestabad of Barisal on June 20, 1911.

She took part in the Bengali nationalist movement of the 1950s and civil society leader in independent Bangladesh. She died in 1999 and was the first woman to be given a state funeral in Bangladesh.

She was honored with Bangla Academy Literary Award, Ekushey Padak, Swadhinota Padak and Begum Rokeya Medal for her contribution to Bangla literature.
