DHAKA: The government has fixed the wholesale price at Tk 180 for each megabit per second (Mbps) of bandwidth in a bid to reduce bandwidth prices to the lowest level.
With effective from July 1, the price cut will initially benefit mostly international gateway operators and internet service providers
The post and telecommunication department of the Ministry of Post, Telecommunication and IT has taken this decision on Thursday (June 27).
It announced the price cut, saying the internet gateways will get 1MBPS bandwidth at Tk 180 from Monday (July 1), down from Tk 360.
This decision was taken at a meeting titled "Affordable digital infrastructure for building Digital Bangladesh" at the conference room of the Post and Telecommunications Department on Thursday (June 27th).
The meeting was chaired by the Postal and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabber.
Postal and Telecommunications Department Secretary Ashok Kumar Biswas was present in the meeting.
Regarding price reduction of bandwidth, Mustafa Jabber said in order to make it possible for ordinary people, including students, to use the internet at an affordable cost, in August 2009, the price of each MBPs internet bandwidth was reduced to Tk 18,000 from Tk 27,000.
Later, in April 2011, Tk 12,000, Tk 8,000 in April 2012, Tk 2,800 in April 2014 and the maximum of Tk 960 in September 2015 and the minimum 360 was reduced in 2018.
