Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has blocked more than 22 thousand porn and gambling sites in a bid to contain crimes in social media platforms.
BTRC director general (systems and services) Brigadier General Md Nasim Parvez made the disclosure at a press conference on Monday.
BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder presided over the press conference while Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar, Secretary Afzal Hossain attended the meeting virtually.
BTRC Vice Chairman Subrata Roy Maitra also spoke on the issue.
In one year, 17,636 offensive Facebook links, 431 YouTube links and 1,060 website links were requested to be blocked, said the telecom regulator.
The use of mobile phones and internet has increased. Already, 3G and 4G (the latest editions of mobile telecommunications technology), are now operational in the country, it said, adding the use of social media platforms has also increased. As a result, the misuse of different websites and social media platforms has increased along with its advantages.
It was also informed at the press conference that so far more than 22,000 pornographic and online gambling sites were blocked from entering Bangladesh through the Cyber Threat Detection and Response of the Department of Telecommunications.
