LPG to get costlier for consumer from today: BERC

The government has readjusted the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) upward and now a 12 kilogram (Kg) LPG cylinder will be sold to the consumers at Tk 1,366 instead of Tk 1,363.

The new prices will come into effect from 6pm on July 2, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Chairman Md Nurul Amin made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday.

The BERC chairman also said that the LPG price, which is highly dependent on imports, would be set by the authorities based on the price announced by the Saudi state-run company Aramco.

If the Saudi Arabia increases the LPG prices, then the base price will go up, he said.

Though the import price of the LPG remained unchanged, the prices went up slightly due to the appreciation of the dollars, said the BERC chairman during the press conference held at his office in Dhaka this noon.

The government has been readjusting LPG prices since 2021, following the prices in the global market.

As per the BERC's new rates, the private operators’ LPG price including VAT has been fixed at Tk 113.86 per kg, which was Tk 113.58 in the last month.

And, the prices of different sizes of LPG cylinders will be determined following the rate.

Besides, the price of LPG supplied by the government companies has been kept unchanged at Tk 690 and the new price of LPG (autogas) used in vehicles has been fixed at Tk 62.70 per litre, which was Tk62.53 in the last month.

Various sizes of LPG cylinders are available in the market, ranging from 5.5 kg to 45 kg.

Apart from household cooking, LPG is also used in restaurants, transport and small and large industries.

More than 99 percent of the market is occupied by the private sector currently.
