DHAKA: The 10th International Plastic Fair will be inaugurated on January 27 with the aim of flourishing the country’s plastic industry.

The fair will jointly be organized by Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) and Taiwan’s Chan Chung International Company Limited.

The organizers informed the media at a press conference held at BPGMEA auditorium in the city on Sunday noon.

The four-day fair will take place at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the city and continue till January 30.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will inaugurate the fair to be attended by 15 countries, including the host Bangladesh.

BPGMEA president M Jasim Uddin said the International Plastic Fair has been playing a vital role in strengthening country’s plastic industry.

According to him, the fair introduces new products and latest technology in this sector.

He said some 350 stalls for domestic and foreign companies will be set up in the fairground.

The president hoped that the visitors will get opportunity to see new products and technology, though they became compelled to lessen the numbers of the stalls due to the hartal and blockade.

House hold items, packaging materials, plastic molds, toys, pharmaceuticals materials, furniture and garments accessories, among other items, will be showcased at the fair.

Moreover, BPGMEA and Westa Concern will arrange a seminar on ‘Recycling Plastic Waste’ and a meeting with the buyers on the third day of the fair, January 29.

Jasim Uddin further informed the media that the country has the possibility of exporting plastic products worth $1 billion by 2021 as per the trend of exports.

Due to the current political unrest, the sector loses Tk 12 crore everyday that rings an alarm of losing the international market as the exporters fail to meet the dateline for supply.

The business leader urged the incumbent government as well as all political parties to come to a consensus in protecting the sector.

BPGMEA and BSCIC jointly started the fair for domestic companies in 1987 and for international companies in 2004.

Former BPGMEA presidents M Yusuf Ashraf, Ferdous Wahed and Shamim Ahmed and senior vice-president Gias Uddin Ahmed were present at the conference.
