DHAKA: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said the government would provide Tk 6.5 crore as compensation to the affected people in transport sector due to violence during recent hartal and blockade enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The minister made the disclosure while talking to journalists after a program at the secretariat in the city at noon.
Quader, also ruling Awami League lawmaker, also observed that the prevailing political turmoil is affecting the transport sector badly.
At least 1,200 vehicles were reportedly torched and vandalized during the indefinite blockade imposed since January 5, he added.
Around 40 drivers and helpers were killed and many others received burn injuries in arson attacks during the time, he also claimed.
According to Quader, the premier assured that a primary compensation of Tk 6.5 crore has already been allocated for the affected people.
He further said a list of victims has been made and they would get the money soon following the directive of Prime Minister.
However, earlier on the day, the minister exchanged views in a meeting with a team of businesspeople, led by Danish ambassador Hanne Fugl Eskjær.
