Reconditioned car traders face 7,000cr loss

DHAKA: The importers of reconditioned cars have incurred a loss of about Tk 7,000-crore in past three months due to hartal and blockade across the country.

Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association made the claim at a press conference in National Press Club in city on Monday afternoon.

In his written speech, the organization’s secretary Mahbubul Haque said that a total of 5,655 cars imported from December 4 to March 25, have remained unsold.

Moreover, a total of 7828 cars, 3,031 in Chittagong and 4,797 in Mongla ports, are waiting for delivery resulting a demurrage charge of Tk 1-crore.

According to him, from 100 to 120 units are delivered from the two ports during normal working days.

In past three months, the reconditioned car traders suffered a loss of about Tk 7,000-crore due to the political unrest, he added.

He also demanded the government to provide incentives to continue their business.

The organization’s president MA Hamid said that they had talked to shipping minister Shajahan Khan regarding the matter.

“We are waiting as the minister has assured us,” Hamid added.
