Khulna: Mongla Seaport, the second life-line of the country’s export-import, is buzzing with busy schedule though the normal functioning was hampered initially during the blockade period.
Everything including loading, unloading, duty imposition and customs collection are going on in full swing, learnt from customs sources.
Users of this port informed Banglanews that though the functioning at the port slightly hampered but gradually it has become normal.
They said that the goods to and from Mongla are mostly transported through waterways in comparison to land routes. For this reason, the blockade made little impact on export-import trade in Mongla port.
Mongla Port Sramik Sangha general secretary AKM Shahabuddin told Banglanews that there had been no hartal in any time irrespective of governments. So, it does not exist now. The port functioned normally during the blockade period.
In 2013-14, the export-import volume was 35.44 tons exceeding the target of 31 lakh tons.
In January and February, the volume of unloading the goods was 497,171 tons and 239,778 tons respectively.
In the current fiscal year, the target of export and import trade has been fixed 40 lakh tons of goods, but, it has already achieved trade of 30.25 lakh tons at the end of February.
