DHAKA: The government Thursday proposed a Tk 2.95 lakh crore budget for 2015-16, fixing the target of attaining a higher GDP growth of 7.0 percent in the financial year.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith proposed the budget with Tk 86,657crore deficit which is 5 percent of GDP.
Of which, Tk. 30 thousand 134 crore (1.8 percent of GDP) will be financed from the external sources and Tk. 56 thousand 523 crore (3.3 percent of GDP) from the domestic sources. Of the domestic financing, Tk. 38 thousand 523 crore (2.2 percent of GDP) will come from the banking system and Tk. 18 thousand crore (1.0 percent of GDP) from savings certificate and other non-banking sources.
The finance minister placed the 44th national budget in parliament, expressing his hopes to be able to steer the economy out of the present pressures and problems.
Muhith started giving his budget speech titled “Bangladesh Marches towards Prosperity Paving the Way for Higher Growth” at 3:36pm.
The revenue target of the budget has been fixed at Tk 2,08,443 crore.
Of the revenue, Tk 1,82,244 crore is expected from tax revenue 1,76, 370 from NBR tax revenue, Tk 5,874 crore from non-NBR tax revenue and Tk 26,199 crore from non- tax revenue.
Earlier in the day, the cabinet in a meeting at the Sangsad Bhaban chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the budget, which is about 18.04 percent bigger than that of the outgoing fiscal year.
Muhith is placing the budget in the House through power-point presentation, with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
