DHAKA: Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed informed the Parliament that no gold has been imported in the country on a commercial basis through legal means in past five years.
The minister made the disclosure on Wednesday in response to a question, tabled in the 10th Jatiya Sangsad, by MA Hannan MP.
He said that according to the existing Foreign Exchange Regulation Act -1947, there is an opportunity to import gold on a commercial basis with prior approval of Bangladesh Bank.
According to the minister, no body applied to the central bank for importing gold on a commercial basis over the past five years.
So during the period, any kind of gold was not imported on a commercial basis in a legitimate way, Tofail repeated.
The government has not received any type of revenue from gold importation at the time, he added.
