$500m fund for SME entrepreneurs

DHAKA: Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor Atiur Rahman said a 500 million dollar fund will be open to assist SME entrepreneurs aiming to help eradicate poverty.

The governor made the remark while inaugurating an organization ‘I am SME of Bangladesh’ which begin to develop small and medium entrepreneurs.

The inaugural ceremony was held at a city hotel on Wednesday.



He said the SME entrepreneurs play a vital role in a country’s economy. So, the businesspeople should work altogether to flourish this sector.

Citing that the bilateral relation between Bangladesh and India has gradually been developing for several years to improve the country’s economic condition, the governor said European Union (EU) also joined hands to work with Bangladesh.

Atiur Rahman remarked that when women empowerment will be established in our country then they will lead the small and medium industries’ development.

Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) director general Tawfiq Ahmed Chowdhury presided over the program where EU ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon, Indian high commissioner Pankaj Saran, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) president Hossain Khaled, among others, were present.

BB’s SME department adviser Sukamal Singha Chowdhury gave the welcome speech on ‘I am SME of Bangladesh’.

However, the organization started its journey with the cooperation of BB, Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) and SME related banks and financial corporations.
