Chittagong: Machinery worth over an estimated amount of Tk 1 crore burnt down in a devastating fire at a garment factory in the Oxygen crossing area of the port city on Thursday midnight.
“The fire originated from an electric short circuit in the cutting and finishing section on the 2nd floor of KDS Garments at about 00:15am,” Additional DG of the Fire Brigade Jasim Uddin told banglanews24.com.bd.
On information, eight fire-fighting units rushed in and put out the blaze through a combined combat that lasted till 4am.
General Manager (HR) of KDS Group Zafar Ahmed said 336 sewing machines, 10 cutting machines and a buttonhole machine were damaged in the fire.
Excessive heat of fire and the water used to douse the blaze also damaged a huge stock of cloths of the export-oriented readymade garment factory.
The extent of damage estimated by the factory management is over Tk 1 crore.
