‘Only money cannot eradicate poverty’

DHAKA: Agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury on Thursday commented that only money cannot eradicate poverty from the country.

Rather people should involve in productivity, she added.

The minister made this assertion at the national council on ‘Pathway out of extreme poverty in Bangladesh, the prime experience’ at Institute of Microfinance at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in city.

According to Matia, the ‘monga’ in country’s northern region was not a natural disaster. It was created as people of the area did not get works for a certain period of year due to the lack of road communication.

The affect of ‘monga’ is gradually fading away as agricultural and other products are now being marketed in other parts of the country as Awami League-led government has upgraded road communication and created job opportunities, she added.

Dr Kazi Khaliquzzaman, who chaired the council, echoed the minister and said that only micro-credit cannot reduce poverty.

Development in education, health and training sectors are also needed for poverty eradication, he added.
