New secretariat project not okayed by ECNEC

DHAKA: Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) did not approve the ‘Construction of National Secretariat in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar’ project in a meeting on Tuesday.

The council passed the directives to re-plan the project following the design of eminent architect Louis Kahn.

The meeting, held at planning ministry conference room with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the chair, made this decision.

Planning minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that ECNEC did not approve the project and send it back for re-planning to keep the design of Louis Kahn unchanged.

Sources said that the project with Tk 22,090.70-crore will be provided by the government to construct the national secretariat in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area to provide more space for the administrative work.

The current secretariat building compound has not enough space to be expanded for more accommodation, the sources added.
