Banks asked to give defaulters’ info

DHAKA: Bangladesh Bank asked all scheduled banks and financial institutions to provide loan defaulters’ information to returning officers or assistant returning officers for upcoming municipal elections.

The BB has sent the directives to the banks on Thursday following the instruction of the Election Commission (EC) received on November 29, seeking information of loan defaulters.

The central bank also sent a copy of its directives to the EC.   And banglanews has collected a copy of the order.

Bangladesh Bank Credit Information Bureau (CIB) general manager Mansura Khatun sent the directives to Director or Chief
Executive of all scheduled banks.

To provide the defaulters’ info, CIB cell of all banks were asked to remain open from 8:00am to 9:00pm on December 4-6.

Thursday was last day for nomination paper submission in the municipal elections. Returning officers will scrutinize the nomination forms on December 5-6. They will need information of loan defaulters during the time.

So, the central bank asked returning officers to send nine counts of information’s of probable candidates through fax or special bearer.

The voting of 235 municipal corporations will be held on December 30. Candidates will compete against 235 mayoral, 2,961 general councilor and 742 reserved councilor posts.

There will be 3,582 polling stations so far to take vote. There are 3,586,356 male and 3,576,040 female voters in the electoral areas.

As many as 61,143 officials will be supervising the elections.
