Specialized hospitals for workers

DHAKA: The state minister for labor and employment affairs Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Wednesday said two specialized hospitals will be built in Gazipur district to treat Occupational Diseases of laborers in the industries.

He made this disclosure while addressing a roundtable conference titled “Relocation of Hazaribagh Tanneries: Workers Perspective”, organized by Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation (BLF), at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in city Wednesday morning.

The state minister further said, “There is no hospital in Bangladesh for treating Occupational Diseases. Two specialized hospitals will be built in the country very soon as per directives of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina”.

He also said that the shifting of tannery industries to Savar is a long term process.

“It would be tough to rebuild the tannery industry in Savar if the provisions like accommodation, education for children and medical treatments were not facilitated for the laborers there,” he added.

BLF chairman Abdus Salam Khan chaired the conference, which was conducted by its secretary general ZN Kamrul Anam.

Project Director M Abdul Qaiuum gave speech as a special guest.

Other than that, Leather Engineering and Technology College assistant professor Sabur Ahmed, Bangladesh Tanners Association chairman Shahin Ahmed, Jatiya Sramik League president Sukkur Mahmud, Tannery Workers Union general secretary Abdul Maleq also spoke at the conference.
