DHAKA: ‘National Vegetable Fair 2016’ will take place in city with more than 200 varieties of vegetables.
The visitors will get opportunity to know the detailed information about the vegetables in different parts of the country during their visit to this exhibition.
This fair, to be organized by agriculture ministry, will start on 17 January and continue till 19 January.
Preparations have already started for this mega event.
Agricultural Extension Department director general Mohammad Hamidur Rahman told banglanews, “One of the main objectives of the fair is to create awareness about producing and consuming vegetables”.
He further said, “Discussions on various kinds of vegetables, which are being cultivated in our country, will be arranged during the fair”.
“The discussants will talk about the way to find the varieties of vegetables and conserve them.”
“Discussions will be held to introduce the varieties of the vegetables, the method and technology regarding the productions.”
Sources from horticulture wing of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) that more than 110 types of common vegetables are found across the country.
But besides these there are other uncommon vegetables that have been cultivated and have different names in different places.
These kinds of vegetables will be also showcased in the fair, they added.
According to the sources, the visitors will also find potatoes from 15 to 18 types, egg-plants of 22 types, tomatoes from 10 to 15 types, beans from 20 to 25 types in the exhibition.
Agronomist Sunil Chandra Dhar of DAE informed banglanews that from 70 to 80 types of vegetables are usually supplied to the capital. But besides these, different types of vegetables are being cultivated. The citizens will know about new and different types of vegetables in this fair.
He said, “There are many interesting facts about vegetables. Some crops stay vegetables when they are green, but they ripe they become fruits, like, papaya, plantain and others”.
“Innovative information will be available in this fair,” he added.
Sources inside agriculture ministry said that the fair, which is first of its kind in the country, will feature an inaugural session with the participation of government and non-government organizations.
