The students after visiting East West Media Group (EWMG) premises in the capital’s Bashundhara area after attack said they will wind up any attack on the mass media.
Earlier, on Monday (August 19) afternoon, miscreants vandalised the East West Media Group’s office and assaulted a female journalist.
A group of miscreants equipped with lethal weapons entered the media house around 2:45 pm chanting with several slogans and carried out the vandalism.
They first entered the Radio Capital office and vandalised official equipment, including interior decoration, furniture, doors, window panes, laptops and computers and broadcasting machineries.
A female journalist was also attacked, but she was rescued by her colleagues without sustaining any major injuries.
Later, the attackers vandalised a number of cars and motorcycles parked inside the media complex.
An eyewitness said a group of miscreants abruptly entered the media house and went on vandalism indiscriminately.
Upon receiving the information, Abu Baker Majumdar, one of the coordinators now in Rangpur, in his impromptu reaction said that there is no connection between the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the attackers.
However, after the attack on East West Media Group, about two hundred students from various universities including North South University and Independent University of Bangladesh visited the scene.
At that time, the students told they were not involved in this heinous activity.
These attacks are being carried out by some miscreants to protect their own interests. Students are ready to stop attacks on media, they told.
“After a revolution, there is a high probability of a counter-revolution. Some people are trying to ruin the achievement of the students, this attack reflects their agenda. They are using the name of students repeatedly. We can see it in different places,” students said.
“We saw today at East West Media Group that those miscreants vandalized media offices in the name of students is a disgraceful incident. Ordinary students don’t promote such occurrence,” students further said.
Independent University of Bangladesh coordinator Tori said, “Those who attacked at East West Media are not students. We were together during the movement; therefore, we never want our country to be harmed, our people to be harmed. We are with people.”
East West Media Group PLC is the leading media conglomerate in Bangladesh and a proud subsidiary of the esteemed Bashundhara Group.
The media complex houses two Bangla dailies, Kaler Kantho and Bangladesh Pratidin, an English daily, Daily Sun, an online news portal, banglanews24.com, and T Sports, a Bangladeshi Bengali-language sports oriented television channel.
