Students under the banner of "Technical Student Movement" blocked the roads at Satrasta in the capital's Tejgaon Industrial Area on Monday (Sept 9) to press home their six-point demands.
This created severe traffic congestion in and around Tejgaon, Hatirjheel, and Farmgate.
Tejgaon Industrial Area police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Gazi Shamimur Rahman confirmed the information to the media.
He said: "Traffic on both sides of the road has come to a standstill due to the blockade. Efforts are being made to persuade those who have blocked them from the road."
As a result of the road blockade, the road from Farmgate through Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue to Shahbagh was almost completely paralyzed by traffic.
The students' demands are: All craft instructors who were appointed “controversially” in 2021 should be transferred from the technical department and all institutions immediately; diploma engineering courses should be ensured for a duration of four years and every semester (episode) should be of full duration (six months); no one other than a diploma engineer can apply for the post of sub-assistant engineer (10th Grade) and sub-assistant engineer and equivalent posts should be reserved for diploma engineers; the Technical Education Board must be reformed so that no personnel outside the technical sector can manage the technical sector; the controversial recruitment regulations of the Directorate of Technical Education must be amended to fill all vacant positions through the recruitment of technical personnel to resolve the teacher shortage; and to increase opportunities for higher education, 100% of the seats must be ensured in the proposed four engineering colleges for engineering students' diplomas.
