DHAKA: The results of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations 2010 were published Thursday with a higher average pass percentage of 74.28.

The success rate of students under eight education boards, the Technical Education Board and the Madrasa Education Board is higher than last year’s mark by 1.5 percent, according to officials.

Also, this year’s results witnessed a leap of GPA-5 scorers, with a total of 28,671 students achieving the highest grade, according to the Education Ministry. Last year, the number of GPA-5 scorers was 20,136.

Publishing the results Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “This glorious performance of students is a result of combined efforts of candidates, teachers, guardians, government as well as journalists."

The standard of selecting best institutions was based on registration in class nine, he said. "The results were published within 57 days for the first time," he told reporters at his ministry.

There was found a mismatch between some statistics given in a loose sheet by a ministry official and the result sheets supplied from the ministry’s computer centre.

Amid the faux pas and a fracas, the journalists went to the extent of demanding punitive measures against senior information officer of the ministry Subodh Chandra Dhali. “I’ll see to it,” the minister said to pacify them.                 

Among the general education boards, Sylhet Board with the lowest turnout at the exam stood highest on the list on the basis of passing rate with 76.12 percent while Dinajpur Board was placed at the bottom with 67.54 percent.

Pabna Cadet College and Rajshahi Cadet College jointly stood first among the colleges securing the highest 90 points on some criteria set by the government in the HSC Examination 2010.

Besides, Cadet Colleges stood first in every general education board.

The number of colleges having cent-percent passes declined this year and so did the number of colleges with ‘zero pass’.

According to the statistics on results, cent-percent students of 714 institutions out of total 7,101 came out successful. In 2009, the number of all-pass colleges was 755.

On the other hand, not a single student from 25 institutions could pass the examinations. The number of no-pass ones, however, came down from last year’s 41.

Earlier in the day, the Education Minister, Nurul Islam Nahid, handed over the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally at Gano Bhaban. Chairmen of all the Education Boards accompanied the Minister.

The results would be available at all examination centres, websites of education boards and through mobile phone short message services (SMS).

A total of 718,084 students -- 386,671 males and 331,413 females -- appeared in this year`s HSC and equivalent examinations that began on 1st April.

Under Dhaka Board, 194,925 students sat for the examinations while 82,174 under Rajshahi Board, 53,934 under Comilla Board, 78,801 under Jessore Board, 42,976 under Chittagong Board, 35,141 under Barisal Board, 19,820 under Sylhet Board and 72,852 under Dinajpur Board.

Besides, 73,790 students appeared under the Madrasa Education Board while 63,671 under the Technical Education Board.
