India recorded 38,628 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending at 8 am on Saturday, pushing the nationwide tally to almost 3.19 crore (3,18,95,385).

Besides, the death toll climbed to 4,27,371 with 617 daily fatalities, the Union Health Ministry’s update informed.

This comes a day after the country saw 44,643 new coronavirus cases, the highest in about a month.

Kerala continues to be the top contributor, recording 19,948 cases followed by Maharashtra (5,539 cases).

India’s active Covid-19 caseload now stands at 4,12,153. The national Covid-19 recovery rate improved to 1.30 per cent, the ministry’s statement read. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has climbed up to 3,10,55,861, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.34 per cent.

The total number of vaccine doses administered so far has reached 495.3 million under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Over 50 crore Covid vaccine doses administered in India
The cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has surpassed 50 crore with more than 43.29 lakh doses given on Friday, the Union health ministry said.

“India soars high on #COVID19 vaccination, historic record of 50 crore doses administered to date!” Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in a tweet.

Elaborating on the increasing pace of vaccination, he said the country took 85 days to touch the figure of 10 crore. It then took 45 days to cross the 20-crore mark and 29 more days to reach 30 crore. India took another 24 days to reach 40 crore and 20 more days to cross 50 crore vaccinations.

80 crore Indians got free ration during coronavirus pandemic: PM Modi

As many as 80 crore Indians got free ration during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday.

These include five crore people from Madhya Pradesh, Modi said, during a video interaction with Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana beneficiaries from the state.

Describing the coronavirus pandemic as the biggest disaster faced by humanity in the last 100 years, Modi also said people should continue to wear masks, sanitize hands and maintain social distancing to check the spread of the virus.

“India gave the first priority to the poor, in its strategy to combat the crisis due to coronavirus. Be it Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana or Pradhan Mantri Rozgar Yojana, we thought about food and employment of the poor from day one itself,” he said.
