Rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of the country resumed, eight hours after the derailment of six compartments of an intercity train in the capital.
Rubayet Islam, signal engineer of the Bangladesh Railway, said all the derailed bogies have been salvaged. As the incident caused damage to the track, train services restarted using the other track around 8:30am on Friday (Oct 25), he said.
Earlier, the Panchagarh Express veered off the track soon after it left Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station around 12:15am.
Witnesses said as the train was moving slowly at the time, it could escape a major accident.
The derailment caused immense suffering for passengers at other stations since several trains got stuck there. In the capital, trains were leaving Kamalapur station running behind their schedules.
On Thursday morning, a Narayanganj-bound commuter train derailed in Dhaka’s Gopibagh area.
