Inspector Md Jahangir Arif of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) has been temporarily suspended for attempting to submit final reports clearing former ministers Salman F Rahman and Anisul Huq in two murder cases without proper authorization.
The cases involve the killings of Sabuj Mia and Md Shahjahan Mia during the July-August student-uprising protests.
On October 23, Inspector Arif attempted to file the reports, misrepresenting himself as an officer of New Market Police Station instead of DB. He also bypassed mandatory approvals from senior officers, as required in high-profile investigations.
After the matter came to light, the reports were halted, and the investigation is now ongoing. Authorities are also examining the role of ADC Sanjida Afrin, who was alleged to have instructed Arif, though she denied the claim.
The DB’s Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallik confirmed Arif’s suspension and said that necessary actions are being taken against those involved.
