DHAKA: At least five people were killed and around hundreds injured during the first day of 60-hour nonstop countrywide shutdown, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, began on Monday morning.
In Dhaka: A critically burnt passenger of CNG-run auto-rickshaw, which was set afire by hartal supporters Sunday night, died in the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Mostafizur Rahman, 35, purchase officer of Biswas Synthetic Factory, a sister concern of Biswas Group.
On Sunday night, Mostafizur Rahman and his colleague Asad Ali, along with goods, were going to the factory of Biswas Synthetic Group.
Meanwhile, the hartal supporters intercepted their CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Aricha highway near the Rouf gate of Savar Cantonment and torched the vehicle, leaving two passengers and the driver Hasu Mia (35) injured critically.
The burnt injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In Lalmonirhat: A youth was killed in a triangular clash among BNP, Awami League and police in Dhorala Bridge area under Patgram upazila of the district in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Nasir Hossain, 22, an activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
In Chittagong: A readymade garment official was killed in an accident as pickets chased a vehicle in the port city on Monday.
The deceased was identified M Zakir, son of Ali Hossain of Khulshi Dampara. He was a commercial manager of readymade garments of the city.
Sources said pickets chased a tempo at Bahaddarhat-Kalurghat road around 10:30am. Zakir was severely injured as the tempo overturned when it tried to save from the picketers.
He was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries in the noon.
In Netrokona: A passerby was killed and a child injured after a tree, cutting by hartal supporters to create roadblock, fell on them in Kendua upazila of the district in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, 40 of Ramnagar village of the upazila.
The injured child was admitted to District Sadar Hospital.
Locals said some hartal supporters blockaded road cutting tree in Ramnagar area on Rampur-Boikherhati road around 6:00am. At one stage, a branch of tree fell on Salam and his son while they were passing the area, leaving him dead on the spot and injured one.
In Natore: A farmer was killed as hartal supporters chased him at Nayabazar of Gurudaspur of the district in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Ishaq Molla, 35, son of Khoimuddin Molla of Tarash upazila under the district.
Stray incidents:
In Dhaka: Two passers-by were injured as hartal supporters blasted cocktails in Malibagh Chowdhurypara area in the capital on Monday morning.
Sources said that in support of hartal BNP brought out a protest procession in the area and exploded five cocktails, leaving two persons injured.
Besides, hartal supporters brought out procession in Sabujbagh, Khilgaon, Rampura police station area and blasted six cocktails.
Pickets also blasted two cocktails at Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) and Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court yards on Monday afternoon.
The incident took place at 2:45pm, the first day of 60-hour nonstop hartal called by BNP-led 18-party alliance.
Sources said hartal supporters blasted two cocktails in front of CMM court mosque and another is in front of CJM court.
In Gazipur: A 14-year-old boy was completely burnt as hartal supporters set on fire at a covered van in Chandana intersection of the district in the morning.
The victim was identified as Moniruzzaman of Kaliakoir upazila in the district.
Witnesses said Moniruzzaman’s father was waiting for garments goods after parking his vehicle on the road opposite to the National Law College. His son was sleeping inside the vehicle.
All of a sudden, hartal supporters set afire to the van at around 09:30am, leaving the child injured critically, they added.
On information, Gazipur fire service rushed to the spot but in the meantime fire burnt the whole body of the child.
Later, fatally injured child was sent to burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On Saturday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced 60-hour nonstop hartal from Monday morning.
