BNP leaders sent to jail

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Saturday sent top five opposition leaders to jail rejecting their bail plea in two separate cases filed with Motijheel Thana on charge of attacking police and blasting cocktails.

The leaders are standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, BNP chairperson’s advisor Abdul Awoal Pintu and personal assistant Shimul Biswas.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Joynab Begum passed the order in the afternoon when police produced them before the court with 20-day remand plea.

The court also fixed Thursday next for hearing their remand and bail plea. Barrister Rafiqul Haq and Advocate Sanaullah Mia moved for the BNP leaders.  

Earlier in the day, the BNP leaders were shown arrested in the two cases.     

On November 5 and September 24, the cases were filed wit the thana on charge of attacking police, blast cocktails, obstructing government works and giving directions of all subversive activities.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Media Masudur Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews.

The five leaders were picked up from two separate points in of the capital last night.
