A Dhaka court today (December 11) rejected a plea filed by the Swechasebak League leader Sheikh Jamal for bail in a case lodged over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim.
Acting Judge Ibrahim Miah of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court issued the order following a hearing on the matter.
Jamal, who is also a journalist by profession, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from his Moghbazar residence on October 24, 2023, in connection with the case.
The case stemmed from the violence surrounding a political rally in the capital on October 28, 2023. According to the case documents, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had organized a large rally, which was countered by the Awami League’s own gathering aimed at disrupting the BNP's programme. In the ensuing clash, Awami League activists, with assistance from the police, attacked the BNP rally in Naya Paltan, leading to the death of Juba Dal leader Shamim.
The murder case was filed with the Paltan Police Station on September 24, 2023, and Jamal was subsequently arrested in relation to the crime.
