DHAKA: Under certain circumstances a rumour spreads that Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad has resigned.

Party leaders have kept their mum further fuelling the rumour.

Ershad himself showed a mysterious gesture.

Party insiders said Ershad in the morning sent a letter to JP’s new Secretary General Ziauddin Bablu.

A personal staff of the JP Chairman reached the letter to JP Secretary General.

“I heard it was sir’s resignation letter,” the personal staff said admitting he carried a letter from Ershad to Bablu.

Bablu couldn’t be reached over phone despite repeated attempts.

Other leaders also would not say anything.

When reached over phone, Ershad jokingly said: “Is it? Did I resign?”

Party sources said that a number of JP presidium members and Opposition Leader Begum Rawshan Ershad in a joint party meeting Sunday expressed resentment over some activities and statements of Ershad.

The resignation might have come following the meeting, some JP sources said.
