Jamaat leader asked to surrender

DHAKA: The Supreme Court asked Jamaat-e-Islami leader Tofail Ahmed to surrender before a lower court by four-week on Monday.

Tofail, also Bandarban’s Naikkhangchari upazila Parishad Chairman, is the prime accused of the 2012 Ramu violence, which refers to a series of attacks on Buddhist monasteries, shrines, and houses of Buddhist inhabitants in Ramu upazila of neighboring Cox’s Bazar district by local Muslim mobs on the midnight of September 29.

The appellate division of the Supreme Court headed-by chief justice M Mojammel Hossain asked Tofail to surrender within four weeks, rejecting the leave to appeal.

In the hearing, Ekramul Haque, Deputy Attorney General, stood for the state while Maqbool Hussain moved for Tofail.
