‘AL trying to split 20-party alliance’

DHAKA: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday alleged that incumbent Awami League is trying to split the 20-party alliance.

He made the allegation in a meeting in remembrance of former secretary general of BNP Barrister Abdus Salam, organized by Abdus Salam Smriti Sangsad, at National Press Club in the evening.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam said, “The then government, before the January 5 general election, shouted that the BNP-led alliance is going to split. Again they are saying the same thing. Basically, they are trying to take our people out.”

He added, “I knew AL general secretary as a nice person but he also has been telling lies. Recently he claimed that he talks with BNP acting secretary general time and again which is an outright lie.”

“We only talked three times; first time, I talked with him to inquire about whether he had gotten the letter for talks. Later, I talked with him for two times, before the January 5 election, in presence of Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.”

Fakhrul also alleged that Suranjit Sengupta has bee trying to confuse the BNP leaders and activists by explaining our speeches in a twisting manner.
