DHAKA: Standing Committee Chairman on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Suranjit Sengupta said that the trial of August 21 grenade attack will be completed within August in next year.
He came up with the assertion while addressing a discussion held at the hall room of the public library of Bangabandhu Academy on Friday.
Suranjit, also Advisory Council Member of Awami League, said that he will place the procrastination in trial of the grenade attack in the next meeting of parliamentary standing committee. All the obstacles would be uprooted to speed up the trial, he added.
He also suggested for emphasizing and giving importance to this case like as war crimes trial.
Haji Mohammad Salim, Member of Parliament of Dhaka-7, presided over the program where other senior leaders were also present.
Ten years ago, in 2004, frenzy grenades were rained on the rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city when Sheikh Hasina was addressing the gathering with almost all central leaders of Awami League present.
24 people killed and scores maimed in that incident. The dead included the party’s women’s affairs secretary Ivy Rahman.
On July 3 in 2011, a supplementary charge sheet of the case was submitted accusing 30 more persons, including the BNP senior vice-chairman, Tarique Rahman, of complicity in the attack.
Till Thursday, court recorded the statements of only 98 out 491 witnesses since the trial began in 2008.
