DHAKA: After the vote counting in the by-elections to 18 Union Parishads (UPs) across the country Awami League supported candidates won in 10 seats and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) backed candidates won in 2 seats.
AL supported candidate those won are Krishnakanto Bidur in Vadai UP and Nur Islam in Tushbhandar UP under Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat, Kamruzzaman Manik Sardar in Shakipur UP under Bhedarganj Upazila of Shariatpur, Khaled Hossain Dewan in North Charbangshi UP under Raipur of Laxmipur, Marzina Begum in Baluakandi UP under Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj, Monwara Begum in Bhola Sadar upazila’s South Digholdi UP, Abul Bashar in Borhanuddin’s Sachra UP, Harun Hazari in Lalmohon’s Charakhvuta UP and Abdur Rashid Miah in Lalmohon’s Kalma UP.
BNP supported candidate M Faridul Islam Farid won in Shaldanga UP under Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh and Golam Azam Mayek won in Laksmipur UP under Sadar upazila in Gaibandha.
Banglanews local correspondents report that the polls, started from 8:00am, continued till to 4:00pm without any break.
Sources told that huge police personnel, along with members of other law enforcing agencies, were deployed in all the polling stations to maintain law and order situation.
Besides, striking force were on guard in the election areas to maintain polls-friendly environment.
